February 27, 2008 // Amsterdam – As the first presenters at the Society of Petroleum Engineers conference in Amsterdam February 25-27, BP demonstrated their use of IOCOM systems to connect their global command centers and their offshore rigs. BP conducted an impressive live demonstration of the technology, reaching out to a command center in Azerbaijan and then the Azeri offshore rig, connecting smoothly and seamlessly to both sites throughout the presentation.
IOCOM's ability to operate over a variety of networks using scalable bandwidth affords unprecedented access to remote locations with limited connectivity.
Speaking from the offshore Azeri platform, Ben Harris outlined the ways in which IOCOM, as part of their Advanced Collaboration Environment, has added value to BPs production facilities. "By using it effectively we're improving our operating efficiency of our production facilities. It helps us to build stronger team relationships with our neighboring platforms, the onshore terminal and piplines, and with our support teams in Baku and in Sunbury. It also greatly enhances the way that we can share the valuable information through the use of the toolkit."
According to Harris, the collaboration environment allows remote optimization modelling and support from onshore engineers, enhanced response time to unplanned shutdowns, and the ability to manage and minimize planned shutdowns for upgrades and major inspections. All of this adds up to increased uptime and efficiency for the offshore drilling platforms.
